Russian Immigrants in Canada in Russian Language

Russian ChristmasHi everyone who is reading my blog about Russia and Canada and immigration from one to another one and back. Not everyone knows that Russians are celebrating Christmas on January 07th, not on December 25th like everyone else.

This happened a while ago when Russian Orthodox Church didn’t follow the world change from old Julian calendar to a newer Gregorian one. This 2-weeks difference also impacts New Year and Easter.

Though Russians accepted Gregorian calendar, the church is still rejecting it which made the Russian Orthodox Christmas more religious event rather than family one like it is in Western countries.

The secular government restored Russian Christmas as a public holiday on Jan07 and nowadays it is being celebrated wider after decades of  suppression during communist time.

Anyway, I’d like to say Merry Christmas to all my readers and everyone else who is celebrating it today!!!
